Arizona beats Cardinals with grand slam by Smith and homer by Ketel Marte

Pavin Smith hit his first career grand slam, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

Ketel Marte also homered and drove in another run with a single for Arizona.

Merrill Kelly (1-2) pitched six innings, allowing five hits and one run. He struck out three and didn’t walk. Kelly improved to 3-1 in five career starts against the Cardinals. Andrew Chafin earned his third save after facing three batters in the ninth.

Jack Flaherty (1-2) was removed in the seventh after facing three batters. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out four. Flaherty hadn’t faced the Diamondbacks since 2019.

Marte led off the seventh with his second home run of the season that put Arizona back on top after St. Louis tied the game in the sixth.

Smith hit a 2-2 curveball with the bases loaded and sent it 414 feet into the right-field box with his first home run of the season. Smith, who had nine home runs in 75 games in 2022, began the season at Triple-A Reno and was called up on April 8.

For the Diamondbacks, the Dominican Ketel Marte 4-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. 4-1 with a run scored.

For the Cardinals, Venezuelan Willson Contreras 4-2 with one produced.
