Ari Sánchez, finally a prophet at home

The second he has succeeded, because last year Ari Sánchez (with Paula Josemaría) failed to lift the title in Reus, and it hurt. But today, against the number ones in the world, the local star and Paula have achieved their second title of the season of the five that have been disputed, in the second defeat of the year for Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar, who had a 15-game winning streak. The men’s final was won by Momo González and Miguel Yanguas, in their first week together; Opposite were Pincho Fernández and García Diestro, one of the best couples so far this season, and they gave a great final.

Ari (MVP) and Paula adapted to the court and imposed their game against the best in the world, who dominate the ranking and the year, because Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay are usually a roller. But in this final, those who seem to be their only rivals for the throne led them to situations in which they are not feeling well: Alejandra could not take advantage of her right, and Gemma in the net did not add the usual points, and in the cross he found Ari, hyperactive in this clash, in attack, in defense, crossing over the net, accompanying and improving Paula. It was the third final of 2023 between the two couples, and in the one that Sánchez and Josemaría have offered the best image: 6-3 and 6-2 so as not to give any doubt.

If by ranking the women’s final is the best that can be seen at this moment, in the men’s, without the circuit, it seemed on paper more sweetened, but the four protagonists offered a spectacular, brilliant game, with simply magical actions: surprising blows, stratospheric exits from the track, impossible defenses that were actually improbable attacks. And that state is normal for the couple to win Momo González, brilliant in that game, and well accompanied by Yanguas. This time the people from Extremadura lacked the regularity of García Diestro, with more forced errors than usual, which forced a magnificent version of resilience from Pincho Fernández: 6-3 and 7-6.
