Aragón sees the COE’s new proposal “unpresentable”

The Aragonese Government considers the new proposal for the distribution of evidence made by the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) to be “unpresentable” for the candidacy for the 2030 Winter Olympics in order to try to bridge the existing differences with Catalonia. This has been assured to Efe by sources from the Aragonese Government, who have confirmed information published today by the Aragón Newspaper in which it is explained that the proposal was transferred yesterday afternoon to the Minister of Education and Sports, Felipe Faci, through a phone call made by the president of the COE, Alejando Blanco.

According to these sources, the new proposal would include the three valleys of the Aragonese Pyrenees, Candanchú, which would maintain the biathlon but lose cross-country skiingproof that it would go to the Formigal station, while Cerler would host freestyle instead of Baqueira Beret (Lleida), which would keep snowboarding. In the opinion of these sources, the biggest loser in the distribution would be the city of Zaragoza, which would lose figure skating and it would be limited to hosting the short track and long track tests, the latter test that would require the construction of a new facility that could cease to be used after the Olympics.

They have expressed their discomfort at the COE’s decision to not modify its initial proposal to maintain all the alpine skiing events, the most spectacular of the Winter Gamesin the Catalan station of La Molina, and add figure skating in Barcelona to ice hockey, another of the main disciplines of the games. The aforementioned sources have announced that the Aragonese Minister of Education and Sports will appear before the media today to express Aragon’s position in relation to the proposal, in the absence of thirteen days to meet the maximum period recommended by the president of the COE for reaching an agreement between the parties.
