The Apple Watch is in the news today for all the best reasons. According to the AppleInsider website, Apple’s wearable will have helped save a woman trapped in a river with icy waters.

The incident took place on June 15 when the user was swimming in the icy waters of the Columbia River, in the state of Oregon. At one point, the woman stuck her foot on a rock at the bottom of the river, putting herself in a very dangerous situation.

It is at this point that the user decides to use the SOS function of the Apple Watch to contact the emergency services, who immediately went to the scene to carry out the rescue.

According to the incident report, the woman was found in an advanced state of exhaustion, showing the first signs of hypothermia, as she was trapped in water around 13 degrees.

The SOS function has a specific way of being activated

The story ended for the best with the woman being immediately saved and rescued. This isn’t the first time Apple’s handheld has helped with a rescue. On a previous occasion, a man was also saved when he was under a frozen river, using the exact same functionality.

Remember that the SOS function of Apple smartwatches can be activated by pressing and holding the side button, located under the Digital Crown, until the Emergency SOS function appears on the screen.

Another point to keep in mind is that for this feature to work 100%, the wearable must be equipped with mobile communications.
