Apple Warns: Don’t Dry Wet Phones in Rice, Try This Simple Method

Experts are urging smartphone owners to avoid common home remedies, such as submerging devices in rice, for water damage, instead offering critical, immediate steps to save compromised electronics.

Technology giant Apple has specifically warned that placing a water-damaged phone in a bag of rice is ineffective and can even cause further harm to the device.

During flood situations or after accidental water exposure, swift action is crucial for a smartphone’s survival. Users should immediately power off the device and remove all cases.

The wet phone should then be placed in a dry location, positioned vertically with the charging port facing downwards. Gently tapping the device can help expel trapped water.

Experts advise against inserting any material, such as cotton swabs or cloths, into ports. Blowing air, either by mouth or with compressed air, is also not recommended as it can push water further into the device.

Once positioned correctly, the device should be allowed to air-dry naturally. This method offers a better chance of recovery than attempts to absorb or blow out water.

Smartphone water resistance is indicated by an Ingress Protection (IP) rating, which can be found on the manufacturer’s website. An IP68 rating, common in newer flagship models, typically means a device can withstand immersion in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.

Some high-end smartphones, like certain iPhone models, may be rated to endure deeper submersion, such as 6 meters, exceeding standard IP68 test depths.

Many Android smartphones priced above approximately $275 come with some level of water resistance, such as an IP54 rating, which protects against splashes and light rain. Most top-tier Android phones feature IP68 resistance, with some foldable models being notable exceptions.

The effectiveness of a phone’s water resistance can also diminish over time as the adhesive seals within the device weaken, typically after two to three years of use.
