Well, well, well, it seems Apple isn’t quite ready to close the book on its next big software update. Just two weeks before the final version is due, the company has released the ninth beta for iOS 26. This isn’t just for iPhones, either. We’re also seeing beta 9 for iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, and visionOS 26. This is a bit of a surprise because, in the past, only iOS 12 saw more than nine beta versions before its official release.
For the last few years, Apple has typically wrapped up its major iOS updates with just eight beta releases. But not this time. The ninth developer beta of iOS 26 is here, signaling that the company is still fine-tuning things. We can expect the final, redesigned iPhone software to launch officially in roughly two weeks.

iOS 26 Beta 9 Arrives
Apple has described iOS 26 as bringing “a stunning new design, powerful Apple Intelligence capabilities, new ways to stay connected in the Phone and Messages apps, and exciting new features in CarPlay, Apple Music, Maps, and Wallet.” It’s a big update, and the beta process has shown Apple making constant adjustments. Over the past few months, we’ve seen various changes come and go.
- Beta 2 brought a cleaner look with better readability in Control Center. Safari’s menus also got a tidier layout. Accessibility improved too, with added outlines for High Contrast Mode.
- Beta 3 added some opacity to overly transparent tab bars. It also introduced new wallpaper color choices. However, Beta 4 later removed these opacity changes. The Notification Center still shows full transparency when pulled down completely. This could still change before the final release.
- Beta 4 also brought back notification summaries for news and entertainment apps. This Apple Intelligence feature was paused earlier. Some worried that text summaries might change the meaning of headlines.
- Beta 5 showed Apple listening to user feedback. It brought back the “Select” button in Mail. Users also got an option to return to the classic Camera swipe gesture.
- In Beta 6, the Camera swipe option was removed again. But it delivered faster animations and some fresh new ringtones.
- Beta 7 introduced a dedicated “drafts” section within the Messages app, making it easier to save unfinished thoughts.
- Beta 8 focused more on behind-the-scenes improvements. It also brought some welcome enhancements to battery life.
It’s likely that this developer beta will also become Public Beta 6 for iOS 26 very soon.

Is Your iPhone Ready for iOS 26?
The next big software update will work with the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and all iPhone models from the iPhone 11 onwards. If you have an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max, iOS 18 will be your last major update. You’ll need a newer iPhone to enjoy iOS 26’s features and refreshed design. Your older device will still get security updates for a while, though.
Keep in mind, some of the cooler new tricks, especially those powered by Apple Intelligence, need a bit more muscle. These features require an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any model from the upcoming iPhone 16 family.
