Apple M1 Max can be as powerful as PS5 or Nvidia RTX 2080

This Monday, Apple introduced the long-awaited 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with a fresh design. But the most striking part of the new models is the ‘firepower’ that they bring with the integrated M1 Pro and M1 Max processors.

By now the configurations of these processors are known, and NotebookCheck took the risky step of deducing their performance, given what we know of the original M1. The findings show that the M1 Max can be as graphically powerful as the PlayStation 5 or a desktop Nvidia RTX 2080.

Estimates based on M1 performance show staggering numbers

But let’s get to the numbers. For now, it’s good to say that these are estimates. Based on what we saw of the teraflops (TF) performance of the 8-core M1, we calculated what to expect from these new processors.

According to what Apple revealed during the presentation, even at maximum performance, the M1 Max will consume 100W less power than a high-end computer with a discrete (non-integrated) GPU.

But according to these numbers, the 32-core GPU of the M1 Max will be able to perform identically to the 10.07 TF of an Nvidia RTX 2080. And very close to the 10.28 TF of the PlayStation 5.

Let’s look at these estimates with a pinch of salt. If confirmed, will we finally have a MacBook capable of also being gaming machines? As soon as they start reaching the first buyers, we can draw conclusions.
