Apple has officially killed the Mac Pro. The company quietly scrubbed the high-end workstation from its website on Thursday afternoon. This marks the permanent end of the iconic tower lineage. The execution stems directly from Apple’s broader architectural pivot to Apple Silicon. The unified memory design simply cannot support the external dedicated GPUs that professionals relied on the massive 2019 chassis to house.
Attempting to buy the $6,999 desktop now redirects you straight to the general Mac homepage. Apple confirmed to multiple outlets that it has no plans to design or produce any future iterations. The Mac Pro is gone for good.
The Apple Silicon compatibility wall
The final iteration launched in June 2023. It housed the M2 Ultra chip inside a cavernous aluminum case originally built for hot Intel processors and complex PCIe expansion cards. But Apple’s custom silicon changed the rules. The new architecture binds memory and processing together. It rejects traditional plug-and-play graphics cards. That left the massive enclosure completely devoid of its primary purpose.
Professionals stopped buying it. There was no reason to pay a premium for empty metal space.
Mac Studio takes the crown
Apple was already cannibalizing its own flagship. The Mac Studio proved to be a vastly superior machine for creative professionals. It costs a fraction of the price. It takes up barely any desk space.
The Studio now officially reigns as Apple’s top-tier professional desktop. It effortlessly supports the newer M3 Ultra and M4 Max processors. The modular tower format is dead. The compact cube is the future.
