Consumer interest is so high that Apple is now pushing its suppliers to make more phones, much faster.
The Information reports that Apple is indeed stepping up production for the standard iPhone 17. This comes after demand soared beyond what they first expected. The tech giant has already asked two of its main suppliers to boost their output.
Specifically, one major iPhone assembly plant in China received a request to increase its daily production of the base iPhone 17 by about 40%. Another supplier, responsible for non-electrical parts for the same model, was told to raise its capacity by roughly 30%. This shows Apple is moving quickly to meet this unexpected surge in popularity.
This good news, however, comes with a potential catch. The strong sales of the standard iPhone 17 could hurt how well the more expensive iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models sell. This shift might impact Apple’s earnings and profit margins for the October to December 2025 financial quarter.
Apple’s initial production plans for the iPhone 17 series had a different focus. They aimed to make 25% base iPhone 17 models, 10% iPhone Air models, and a hefty 65% for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. This strategy usually works because Pro models tend to sell best, especially in their first few months. The current demand for the base model is certainly shaking things up.
So, why are so many people choosing the entry-level iPhone 17? Apple introduced some significant upgrades that usually only come with the pricier Pro versions. For the first time, the base model now includes a ProMotion display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This means smoother visuals, making everything look better. It also features the Always-On display, another Pro-level perk. Plus, the starting storage got a boost to 256GB. All these improvements came without a big price jump compared to the iPhone 16.
It’s true that the base iPhone 17 uses the A19 chipset, while the Pro models get the A19 Pro. However, for most everyday tasks, users likely won’t notice a real difference in performance. This makes the base model even more appealing for its value.
