Right after people first got their hands on the new iPhone 17 Pro, something unexpected popped up. Users quickly noticed odd marks and faint lines on the phones’ bodies. This happened on the display models in stores.
Seeing a brand-new device show wear so fast got everyone talking online. Social media quickly turned into a huge platform for complaints. Many wondered how a fresh device could already look so worn. But Apple soon stepped in with an answer.
The company confirmed today that the marks customers saw on iPhone 17 Pro models in stores came from Apple’s own chargers. Apple said its worn-out MagSafe stands in stores were creating these marks on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The company stressed these weren’t scratches at all. Instead, it was simply material moving from the stand onto the phone’s surface.
Good news: Apple says these marks wipe right off. They are not permanent damage to the device. Apple promised to fix this issue in its stores. They added that older models, like the iPhone 16, also faced the same problem with these charging stands.
About the Camera
Separately, tests looking at scratch resistance brought up another point. They hinted that the camera area on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max might scratch more easily. This is a different concern from the marks left by the MagSafe chargers.
Apple explained that the edges of the camera module share traits with aluminum cases on other devices. Think of it like a MacBook’s body. These edges are built to last and go through many tests before launch. Still, the company admitted users might see normal signs of use over time. This includes small scuffs appearing on the camera edges.
