A complaint has been filed against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap with the Mumbai Police. The controversy stems from his reaction to the backlash faced by the movie “Phule,” a biopic on Anant Mahadevan. Kashyap took to social media to express his discontent, targeting the Brahmin community. In response to a comment, he made a derogatory remark, saying he would “urinate on Brahmins,” sparking widespread outrage. This comment has now landed him in legal trouble.
The film “Phule,” starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha, has been criticized for allegedly promoting casteism. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked the filmmakers to remove certain caste-related words and references before its release on April 25. The CBFC’s directives led to the removal of terms like “Mahar,” “Mang,” “Peshwai,” and “Manu’s caste system” from the film.
Controversy Escalates
Kashyap’s criticism began with the CBFC’s actions regarding his own films. He mentioned that during the screening of “Dhakkad 2,” the board claimed that Prime Minister Modi had eradicated caste discrimination in India. He questioned how someone could identify as a Brahmin if the caste system didn’t exist. Kashyap’s post read, “Brother, if there’s no caste system, how can you be a Brahmin? Who are you? Why are you upset?” This sparked a heated debate online.
In response to a comment suggesting that Brahmins were his “fathers,” Kashyap retorted, “I’ll urinate on Brahmins, any problem?” This comment has now become the focal point of the controversy, with many calling for action against him.
Legal Action
Advocate Ashutosh Dubey, Head of BJP Maharashtra’s Social Media Legal & Advisory Department, has officially filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police, requesting an FIR against Kashyap. Dubey posted the complaint on social media, stating, “In a civilized society, hate speech like ‘I’ll urinate on Brahmins’ can’t be tolerated. The law must take its course.” The complaint highlights Kashyap’s derogatory and casteist comment against the Brahmin community, calling for legal action against him.
