Anurag Kashyap Apologizes After Controversy Over Comments Targeting Brahmin Community and Women

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has apologized for his recent comments that sparked controversy. Kashyap’s remarks were made during a heated exchange on social media, where he responded to a user who claimed Brahmins were superior by saying, “I’ll piss on Brahmins… no problem.” The comment quickly went viral, with many Brahmin organizations expressing outrage.

Backlash and Apology

The backlash against Kashyap was swift, with many calling for action against him. A complaint was even filed against the filmmaker. In response, Kashyap took to Instagram to issue a lengthy apology. He clarified that his original statement was taken out of context and was not meant to incite hatred. Kashyap emphasized that his family, friends, and colleagues should not face threats or abuse because of his actions.

In his apology, Kashyap directly addressed the Brahmin community, saying, “If you’re looking for an apology, here it is. Brahmins, please leave the women alone. Even scriptures teach decorum, not just Manusmriti. Decide for yourselves what kind of Brahmins you want to be.” He added that he was sorry for his part in the controversy.

Context: The ‘Phule’ Controversy

The controversy surrounding Kashyap’s comments coincides with the upcoming release of the film “Phule,” starring Prateik Gandhi and Patralekhaa, which tells the story of social reformers Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule. The film was initially set to release on April 11 but has been postponed to April 25 following suggestions from the Censor Board. Some groups, including the All India Brahmin Society, objected to the film, claiming it portrays the Brahmin community negatively. The filmmakers have maintained that they had no intention of offending anyone and worked closely with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Kashyap’s apology comes as the film’s release date was being rescheduled amid growing tensions. The situation highlights the delicate balance between free speech and sensitivity towards different communities in public discourse.
