Anuparna Roy: Venice Best Director Win ‘Life-Changing,’ Brings New Opportunities

Filmmaker Anuparna Roy’s life has significantly transformed following her win at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. She recently shared her experiences, calling the historic achievement a “life-changing moment.”

Roy received the Best Director award for her film ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’ and has since garnered widespread praise. Her victory has led to new opportunities as an independent filmmaker.

She noted a shift in the industry’s perception of her. Producers are now more accessible, and she finds it easier to pitch her upcoming projects.

Roy expressed immense joy at the prospect of making another film, directly attributing it to her festival win. This chance, she said, is the greatest happiness a filmmaker can experience.

She also recounted the initial challenges of producing ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’. Roy admitted she never expected to find producers for the project. The story lacked the commercial aspects typically sought in Indian cinema.

Despite this, she was thankful that producers eventually came on board for the film. Anurag Kashyap presented ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’, which was the sole Indian film featured in Venice’s Orizzonti section.

The movie explores the lives of two migrant women in Mumbai, delving into themes of loneliness, existence, and attachment. It received a strong audience reception during a screening at DIFF 2025.
