Angola’s $20 Million Argentina Match for Independence Sparks Outcry

Angola’s upcoming friendly football match against Argentina, planned to celebrate the nation’s 50th independence anniversary, faces significant public backlash over its multi-million dollar cost. Critics, including opposition politicians and civil society groups, argue the lavish expense is unwarranted given widespread poverty and public health crises.

Various estimates place the match’s cost between $6.45 million and $20 million. ‘Sport News Africa’ reported the figure at approximately $12.9 million, while German broadcaster DW suggested a lower sum around $6.45 million.

Angola’s main opposition party, UNITA, condemned the spending, estimating costs at $20 million. The party highlighted the contrast with the population’s struggles, stating people are “dying of malaria and hunger.”

Civil society organizations echoed these concerns, pegging the cost for the South American team’s travel alone at around $6.45 million. They described the event as “ostentatious” amid the “painful reality” faced by millions of Angolans.

In August, activist groups urged the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) and player Lionel Messi to cancel the match. Their appeal followed riots in the capital that resulted in 30 deaths, further underscoring the social tension.

The match is scheduled for November 14 at Luanda’s Estádio 11 de Novembro, which has a capacity for 50,000 spectators. The Angolan Football Federation announced the fixture as part of the country’s half-century independence celebrations.

Angolan President João Lourenço first extended the invitation to Argentina in November 2023, informing youth members of his ruling MPLA party. The government has yet to release official details on the financial arrangements.
