An interview with Alma Pöysti

With the dark and minimalist aesthetic that the Finnish director has accustomed us to, Aki Kaurismäki, “Fallen Leaves” (‘Autumn Leaves’), It reminds us that despite the loneliness after 40, there is hope in love.

“Fallen Leaves” was released in theaters in Mexico and Latin America on December 7th.

Kaurismäki’s cinema is widely known for its extremely particular humor and long use of silence.

His best-known and critically acclaimed films include “Le Havre” (2011) and “Drifting Clouds” (1996), both nominated Cannes International Film Festival in their respective years.

Fallen Leaves: Love in the Midst of Hopelessness

On this occasion, Kaurismäki presents us with a love story between two completely lonely and hopeless characters. Ansa, played by Alma Pöysti, is a cashier in a supermarket; and Holappa, played by Jussi Vatanen, an alcoholic worker.

Ansa and Holappa will find happiness and hope despite all the obstacles that come their way.

In typical Kaurismäki style, the protagonists take us on the most unpleasant dates you can experience.

In an interview with PlayGround, Finnish actress of Swedish origin Alma Pöysti shared what it’s like to make a film that makes you think one of the best film directors in Finnish history.

Kaurismäki, the “sensei of short jokes”

We’ll call him the sensei of short jokes, “His sense of humor works all over the world, people connect with him everywhere.”, Alma commented.

Naturalness and lightness are feelings that are felt in “Fallen Leaves” not only by the audience, but also by the actors, as all scenes were shot in a single take.

“This is the only way you can really capture the moment when something happens. “It’s the first and only time, so this moment becomes extremely precious.” commented the actress.

One of Alma’s favorite scenes is the one where the characters go on the MOST UNCOMFORTABLE date imaginable. “Ansa and Holappa are very embarrassed, but they are so in love that they don’t really know how to deal with it.”

Fate is one of the film’s main themes, as the characters overcome fake addresses and phone numbers, alcoholism, and even hospitalizations to be able to see each other again after their first meeting..

“That’s the thing, you can meet someone but you don’t really know when or where, it has a lot to do with timing and fate,” Alma said.

Likewise, it’s not very common for these types of characters to fall in love, and we never think about the act of bravery that comes with stepping out of one’s comfort zone.

“It’s super scary to fall in love. They are very lonely people, and so there is no one to disappoint or ruin your life,” Alma said.

At the end of the interview, Pöysti mentioned that “Fallen Leaves” teaches us that with humor and silence you can overcome everyday nonsense.
