An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 shakes the north of Chile

The National Seismological Center of Chile (Onemi) has warned that an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale has shaken the northern region of the country.

At 7:06 p.m. (local time) the agency has indicated that the earthquake has been located 70 kilometers east of the town of Socaire, in the Antofagasta region, and has occurred at a depth of 248 kilometers.

As Onemi has published on Twitter, the greatest intensity of the earthquake – between 5 and 6 magnitude on the Richter scale – has been recorded in Sierra Gorda, Socaire, Quillagua, Calama, Mejillones and Tocopilla.

In this sense, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA) has ensured that "the characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami on the coast of Chile".
