An assailant kills several people with bow and arrows in Norway

A man armed with a bow and arrows he killed several people and injured others on Wednesday near the Norwegian capital Oslo before being arrested, authorities said.

The Kongsberg City Police Chief said there was "a confrontation" between the officers and the assailant, but did not elaborate. He said there were several deaths, but did not offer details.

Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that at least four people were killed.

“The man who carried out the act has been detained by the police and there is no active search for more people. According to the information we have, there is a person behind this, ”said Police Chief Oeying Aas.

Acting Prime Minister Erna Solberg described the attack as "frightening" and said it was too early to speculate on the man’s motive. Police were alerted to the attack around 6:30 pm and arrested the suspect about 20 minutes later. The community is 66 kilometers (41 miles) southwest of Oslo.

According to the police, the suspect walked around the city shooting people with arrows. Several people were injured in tents, Aas said.

The man has not yet been questioned, Aas said.

City officials invited those affected by the attack and their families to gather for support at a local hotel.
