An airline to connect empty Spain

By plane from Teruel to León, or from Ciudad Real to Badajoz, from airport to ghost airport. An airline will connect to Spain emptied

This information is framed on April Fools’ Day, but it’s not just a joke. It highlights the progressive abandonment of the Spanish provinces in infrastructure and connections.

April Fool’s Day was put into circulation by the cheap travel portal Holidayguru.es: “We are pleased to announce the launch of Holidayguru Air, a new airline based at Badajoz airport”, they announce and add: “After seeing with emotion, one of the many demands of the Spanish areas that see their future threatened by depopulation and lack of investment, we decided to take the initiative and set up our own airline in these regions».

In the advertisement, they propose that the airline fly to and from the airports of Valladolid, Teruel, Badajoz, Ciudad Real and León, using some of the so-called ‘ghost airports’ built during the real estate boom. In addition, they emphasize the necessary reconversion of air transport to reduce emissions: “The airline will use 100% sustainable biofuels, in line with the objectives of combating climate change.”

Spain emptied is no joke

Spain EMPTY, is already a social movement with more than 150 platforms and groups fighting for territorial balance. According to him Annual Report 2020 of the Bank of Spain, 42% of Spanish municipalities are at risk of this happening.

Asturias and Castile and León are among the autonomous communities most affected by population abandonment in their municipalities: more than 85% of their municipalities had less population in 2020 than in 1996. After them, Extremadura and Aragon are the territories of those in that a larger percentage of municipalities saw their population decrease.

The other side of the coin is the immigration of citizens from other countries who have seen in the depopulation of rural areas the opportunity to make their living in Spain or of foreigners who settle in these types of cities in search of tranquility.

This arrival of migrants has changed life in many Spanish cities to the point that in some municipalities in 2020 there were already more registered foreigners than Spaniards. For example, in municipalities such as Torre del Burgo, in Guadalajara, more than 90% of the inhabitants do not have Spanish nationality.
