Amobé Mévégué: an African inspiration

The shock that followed the announcement, on September 8, 2021, of the death of Cameroonian journalist Amobé Mévégué, 52, in the Paris where he lived, is as great as the intellectual legacy he leaves behind. From the airwaves of RFI to France 24 (two large French external audiovisual media) and TV5 (the French-speaking channel), through the pan-African channel he created, Ubiznews TV, Amobé Mévégué became the singer of an African continent which is also development through its cultural and intellectual heritage. His ambassadors were the stars of his programs. The philosophy and convictions of the one who loudly claimed his “Africanity” contributed to the host’s popularity on the African continent from which emanate a multitude of anonymous tributes.

“He was us”, wrote his younger brother Essimi Mévégué, also a journalist, in his Facebook page thanking all those who supported his family and saluted the memory of his famous elder. “A first moment of remembrance” around the remains of Amobé Mévégué was organized by his family on the afternoon of September 9th. He has always campaigned for Africa and its diaspora to be united in the world. It was at the heart of everything he did in his life, “ continues Essimi Mévégué. One of the audiovisual producer’s most recent projects illustrates his commitment in this direction: the Worldwide Afro Network (WAN), the worldwide network of Afro-descendants from which the journalist is at the origin.

The network had organized a virtual concert on May 25, 2020 that brought together artists and personalities from the continent and its diaspora to raise awareness against Covid-19. Several other virtual events will follow, including one dedicated to African dance. We repeat it in the information from France in Africa. Once again, he rejoiced in our columns, “Africa comes together and speaks with one voice”. He also recalled the goal of the WAN, which “to create a new platform that brings together creative industries, innovators and opinion leaders to provide a new dynamic to the continent” because, insisted Amobé Mévégué, “the creative industries provide jobs and generate money”.

WAN’s ambition was “give visibility to creators and structure a network with economic partners”. Mainly in favor of younger people who need to be transported on their various cultural adventures. “It is also a new generation that we are highlighting (…) and sector by sector, an active network is then configured “, detailed Amobé Mévégué in July 2020. In this perspective, the network joined its approach Afrochampions, an initiative that brings together captains of industry from the African continent.

Young people, during his long audiovisual career, which was also written at MCM Africa or France Ô, Amobé Mévégué inspired more than one, both professionally and artistically. “He was my mentor”, entrusts franceinfo Africa with his compatriot and film producer Florence Elomo Akoa. “His abrupt departure is an immeasurable loss from a human and professional point of view. He was always available to listen, advise and guide me”. Cinema was one of the first loves of Amobé Mévégué who, according to his family, was preparing a film.

Homage returned to him by Olivier Zegna Rata, the co-founder of pan-African media Afrik.com and current delegate general of the Independent Producers Union (SPI), reflects the feelings of all who knew him. “He is not an African journalist, he is not an African musician, he is not an African poet, he is not a fighter for culture and spirit in the world, who has not felt a little more alone, a little older, a little lost, that day, when Amobé Mévégué died. ” Asked about the death, Amobé Mévégué explained to his interlocutor that he believed to the “survival of the spirit”. The fact that he becomes a source of inspiration seems to be proof of that.
