America’s new condition to give F-16 to Turkey

The US has placed a new condition for the supply of F-16 aircraft to Turkey.

According to international media reports, the US Congress made the supply of F-16 aircraft to Turkey conditional on Sweden joining NATO.

US Secretary of State Tony Blanken said the Biden administration does not see the $20 billion F-16 deal and Sweden’s NATO membership as linked, but some US lawmakers do.

He said some members of Congress are linking Sweden’s accession to NATO to the move forward on the F-16. Congress works completely equal to and independent of the government and its voice and vote are of course important in any such decision.

Congress can veto arms deals approved by the administration although it has never successfully blocked arms sales to foreign countries.
