An American-Israeli dual citizen held hostage by Hamas since October 2023 has been released and returned to Israel.
The 21-year-old, Aiden Alexander, arrived at a preliminary reception point at Re’im Kibbutz in southern Israel on Monday.
He’s receiving initial medical checks and reuniting with his family.
The Israeli military confirmed his arrival.
Hamas announced on Sunday that it would release Alexander, believed to be the last living American hostage in Gaza, as part of efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement.
This comes ahead of Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East this week.
Hamas called for a temporary ceasefire during the release process, but Israel said they would keep a safe passage open without halting their military operations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the release as a “moment of great joy” and thanked Trump for his support.
He attributed the release to Israel’s military pressure and Trump’s political influence.
Trump assured Netanyahu that the US would work closely with Israel to free the remaining hostages still held by Hamas.
Alexander, born in Tel Aviv but raised in New Jersey, was part of an infantry unit stationed near the Gaza border when Hamas launched a major attack on October 7, 2023.
He was among over 250 people taken hostage.
Current Hostage Situation
There are still 59 hostages from the October 7 attack, with only 24 believed to be alive.
The release of Alexander is seen as a positive step, but the situation remains dire for those still captive.
The negotiations and efforts to secure their release continue, with the US and Israel working together to bring the remaining hostages home.
