Amazon just updated its update policy for Fire TV products. From now on, this line of devices from the American giant will have four years of updates.
This is the minimum time Amazon will commit to backing up your Fire TV equipment. The main nuance of this announcement is that the deadline for the release of the respective updates does not start on the product launch date.
Amazon offers four years of support since it was last sold
As stated by Amazon on its official website, the deadline for updates counts from the last time the product was on sale in their stores. This means that even if you buy a product released in 2016 now, it will be supported until at least 2025.
As Amazon advances, most of its gadgets with Fire TV will have official support until at least 2025. It is important to strengthen at least, because the company leaves the extension of official support open until when possible, through a technical evaluation.
This update policy breaks the pattern we usually see in the market. This requires that a product’s official support period count from the day it was first released.
For example, the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, launched in 2016, would have completed its update period in 2020 respecting the four years announced by Amazon. However, this one will be updated until 2025 as it is still for sale.
Thus, the debate is launched on how technology companies should define the period for updating their equipment. What Amazon has just done will require extensive reflection on the subject.
