Next year, Amazon plans to start offering Project Kuiper in Australia’s vast rural areas. This isn’t a solo mission. Amazon has teamed up with the National Broadband Network Company, also known as NBN Co. This company runs Australia’s government-backed internet infrastructure.
The agreement between Amazon and NBN Co is quite a commitment. They aim to provide satellite internet to more than 300,000 customers across Australia. This extensive rollout is set to be completed by the middle of 2026. It’s a clear sign of how serious Amazon is about this venture.
Joe Lathan, who manages Project Kuiper for Australia and New Zealand, pointed out the unique challenges the country presents. Australia’s huge landmass means traditional cable or fiber setups often can’t reach everywhere. He shared that this partnership brings new ideas to overcome these limits. It shows how innovation can bridge the connectivity gap.
This collaboration is Project Kuiper’s first big partnership. It signals Amazon’s serious effort to compete with Starlink in the satellite internet field. So far, Project Kuiper has sent 78 satellites into orbit. The next launch is scheduled for August 7, when an impressive 3,236 more satellites are set to go up. This quick expansion shows the scale of their ambition.
