Amanda Anisimova defeats Iga Swiatek, earns historic first US Open semifinal berth.

Anisimova defeats Swiatek at the US Open and advances to the semifinals

The US Open saw a major shake-up this Wednesday. American tennis player Amanda Anisimova punched her ticket to the semifinals. This marks her first time reaching this stage at the United States Open. She took down a familiar face, Poland’s Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek had hoisted the US Open trophy just last year, in 2022, right there in New York. But Anisimova had a score to settle. Their match was a highly anticipated replay of the Wimbledon final. Anisimova, ranked ninth globally, was clearly aiming to avenge her earlier loss in London.

And avenge she did. Anisimova powered past Swiatek, the world number two, with a solid 6-4, 6-3 victory. The contest wrapped up in just one hour and 36 minutes. This impressive win secures Anisimova’s third Grand Slam semifinal appearance. It is also her first time in the New York tournament’s final four.

Now, the road ahead gets even tougher. Anisimova will battle for a spot in the final of the season’s fourth and last Grand Slam. She will face either Karolina Muchova, the world’s 13th-ranked player from the Czech Republic, or Japan’s Naomi Osaka. Osaka, currently 24th in the rankings, is a former champion here, having won in both 2018 and 2020. Either way, it promises another gripping contest.
