Altice Portugal and Altice Foundation perform unprecedented surgery using 5G

It was on May 5 that history was made with the performance of the first breast cancer surgery with 5G technology, an effort that united Portugal and Spain. The Champalimaud Foundation, the Portugal and the operator Movistar were the participants in this event that put the 5G technology at the service of Health.

There are 900 km between Lisbon and Zaragoza, a distance mitigated by the impact and capabilities of the fifth generation of mobile networks, 5G. In fact, this distance was the distance shortened by the valencies of Altice Portugal’s fifth mobile generation: speed, lower latency, intelligence and reliability.

These are some of the attributes that made Dr. Pedro Gouveia, a renowned surgeon at the Breast Unit of the Champalimaud Clinical Center, in constant direct audiovisual contact in real time with the Spanish surgeon at the same unit, Rogelio Andrés-Luna.

The surgery was accompanied on the stage of the Congress of the Spanish Association of Breast Surgeons (AECIMA), which takes place until May 7, at the Faculty of Medicine of the Faculty of Zaragoza.

This unprecedented intervention, with remote supervision of a second surgeon, used the advantages of augmented reality and 5G, ensured in Portugal by Altice Labs technology and in Spain by Movistar.

Hololens and 5G from Microsft were the center of attention in this unprecedented surgery

Doctor Pedro Gouveia performed the surgery equipped with mixed reality glasses (Hololens that combine virtual and augmented reality) that allowed him real access to the patient. In addition, at the same time, additional information on special lenses and indications from Spain will be screened.

For her part, Dr. Rogelio Andrés-Luna had a laptop connected to the glasses of the Portuguese surgeon as a work tool. The great novelty in this interconnection was the use of 5G in this case of international use.

The glasses were connected via Eth/USB to a smartphone (such as 5G connectivity), which functioned as a 5G router, configuring Altice Labs, in the operating room, a fifth-generation private network of mobile networks.

The Altice Portugal teams were, throughout the week, at the Av. de Brasilia facilities to assemble and test the Iberian connection in close collaboration with the Champalimaud Foundation and the Spanish operator Movistar. A real example of health connected through technology.

“Altice Portugal is proud to participate in the first international surgical intervention using 5G. Evidence of the noblest purpose of its technological capacity and innovation at the service of the greater good, which is health. This is one more pillar in the history of our R&D brand, Altice Labs, which exports Portuguese technology and talent all over the world”, says Ana Figueiredo, Executive President of Altice Portugal.

A real example of health connected through technology

“We carried out the first experience in the world to use, live and direct, what is called ‘remote proctoring’ (remote supervision) during breast cancer surgery”, explains Dr. Pedro Gouveia enthusiastically.

For Altice Portugal, technology makes sense at the service of people and society. Thus improving your life and bringing tranquility and comfort to your day to day life.

This surgery is a clear example of this objective and the advantages that 5G can bring. Whether it is disruptive technology, essential for the country’s digital transition in various sectors such as health, education, cities, industry or agriculture.
