Alonso, Sainz … and Palou

The weekend was glorious for Spanish motorsport. And it could be even more so. The thing started with Carlos Sainz uploaded to the Sochi box, the fifth in Formula 1 and the third with Ferrari, after having brushed the pole, a masterful start, leading the race … “It was my best weekend,” he says with pride in a job well done. Fernando Alonso also flirted with a podium that topped Lewis Hamilton in his historic 100 victory. Russia hosted a roller coaster of emotions hours before Alex Palou became the first Spaniard to win the IndyCar, the stellar championship of the United States, a world that already explored before Oriol Serviá, and that Alonso put on the Iberian map when he assaulted the Indianapolis 500 in 2017.

The Palou path has stops common to Alonso and Sainz. In addition to having coincided in the oval in 2020, Álex and Fernando have shared a godfather, discoverer, and promoter: the remembered Adrián Campos. He coincided with Carlos in the cadet karting championships in Spain, when the two dreamed of succeeding in the Great Circus. But to that elite only twenty pilots arrive from the world. There are no more places. And talent is not always the only requirement, nor the main one, to sit in a car. Palou knows it. So he looked for other itineraries. For this reason, and also because only two or three cars dominate in F1, which are difficult to access. He likes to win. This is how he swerved his trajectory and landed in the Indy, a kind of American Formula 1, with an exclusively American calendar, but with increasingly international drivers, even with a curriculum in F1: Sato, Grosjean, Montoya … There are also winning cars there. In his second year, Palou already drives one of them. And triumph. And have fun. AND does not miss F1, although the story started from the same starting point.
