Alonso does not deliver the World Cup

Blessed problem, a second place seems little. Alonso achieved in the Monaco GP his best result in Formula 1 since Hungary 2014. It is third in the championship only 12 points behind Pérez. The strategy seemed improvable because he made two stops in two consecutive laps that definitively dropped him from Verstappen, but both in public and in private, the Asturian justifies the decisions: “The track, on that lap, was completely dry apart from turns seven and eight. How am I going to put intermediates, if the track was 99% dry? The forecast called for a small amount of rain, so we had a lot of room behind to put the dry tire and, if necessary, the intermediate. Maybe we went too safe. But that minute and a half it took us to get back to turn five changed everything.”

If he had put the intermediate first, given the events, he could have been very close, or even in front of Max when the Dutchman made his stop. At the same time, if he rides the rain tire and it stops raining, Fernando would have had to make an extra stop compared to the rivals and would have missed the podium. So the strategists of Aston Martin made the most logical decision at all times. Nor had Max shown weakness.

“We had no options. We were brave with the strategy, It is not normal for you to choose the hard wheel at the start doing the opposite to the leaders. That shows our commitment and aggressiveness at Aston Martin to go for the win. We could stay out of the podium, but we already spoke in the morning that we have several podiums this year and we were going for all or nothing for the victory. But we didn’t have the rhythm. The middle wheel performed surprisingly well, Max drove 50 laps with impressive pace and for that he won the race. Not because of the strategy, he was faster, ”explains the two-time champion, who looks above: “I have been third four times this year, and now second. We need one more step.”

Meanwhile, Fernando progresses in the World Cup rankings and approaches second place. AS asks him directly if he thinks about the fight for the title, even from afar. The answer is exciting: “From the seasons I remember, from 2000 and 2010, he would be leading the championship with this year’s results. But now Red Bull and Max dominate every race and even with great results you are one step behind. We didn’t have the best car in 2010 and we were leading the World Championship in Abu Dhabi. We didn’t have the best car in 2012 and we fought until the last lap in Brazil. the championship is long, we will see weekends with Red Bull problems, as Sergio had here with zero points. If Max has a pair of those, we’ll be a bit closer in the championship. This is motorsport, anything can happen. But in pure rhythm we don’t have a chance yet. We didn’t give up though.”

The World Cup comes to Spain

This week the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya hosts the Spanish GP for the 33rd time. In Monaco, Fernando saw Aston Martin with a chance of winning. But for Montmeló normalcy returns. In front of the fans more alonsista the objectives are other: “Gain? I’m not obsessed I will not put pressure on my team or myself next week. We have already seen from race pace that Red Bull is very dominant. In Barcelona, a normal circuit, we will possibly see the usual superiority of Red Bull and also the normal rhythm of Mercedes or Ferrari with their evolutions. There will be weekends this year where we will be seventh and eighth, and on others we will fight for the podium. I’m not going to Barcelona thinking I’m going to win, I don’t want to disappoint anyone. We have to keep our feet on the ground.”
