“Alonso can be three-time champion”

The most unexpected bombshell silly season. Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin gave the surprise of the summer with a move no one saw coming. Not even Alpine expected it. He generated doubts, even some are still not entirely convinced, but more and more people are joining this new Spanish ‘Plan’. The investment of the Silverstone brand gives reason to dream: the Spaniard trusted from the first moment in a medium-term project, with a two-year contract and the idea of getting a competitive car that will take him back to victory. The real ‘Plan’ since his return to Formula 1.

Nevertheless, it is still a utopian idea. Aston Martin is ninth in the constructors’ standings and that was what most disconcerted the Spaniard’s decision-making. All before knowing the investment that the brand is already making for the future: a new factory, former engineers from Mercedes or Red Bull… and now a two-time champion at the head of the project. Pedro De La Rosa was the first to get on Alonso’s new boat and, since then, the list has continued to grow. Fernando can win with Aston Martin and he has the ability to make them a winning team. It’s just a matter of time. And the last to secure it is Jean Alesi, former Ferrari driver (among other brands) and champion of the Canadian GP in 1995.

“I understand that there is a new investor in Aston Martin and that they are very ambitious. They have set the bar very high. So I hope that Alonso has made a good move this time because he has sometimes made some mistakes in his life. I hope that Alonso has been successful with this change and ends his career well, It would be a good story for all of us, ”says the Frenchman in an interview with Give Me Sport in which, in addition, he does not doubt the talent of the Asturian, although every process requires time: “Of course he can win titles again. It is not a matter of talent because we know that he already treasures it. It remains to be seen whether he can physically hold out all season battling the young drivers. But I think he can do it. Today’s cars are very demanding to withstand G forces, but Fernando has never stopped driving. When he wasn’t in F1 he was racing sports cars and he’s always in a car so I’m sure he can be competitive. But winning a world championship for a team like Aston Martin right now… I don’t think that will happen, at least next year.”

Another ex pilot that has been undone in praises towards the Asturian is Emerson Fittipaldi, who considers Alonso “one of the best on the grill” and shares Alesi’s view of the chances of winning another title: “Of course Alonso can be a three-time champion. He is the most experienced driver, he is motivated and he is very talented, as he has shown this year.” In an interview for EFEFittipaldi states that the Spanish “It always starts at the back, but ends at the front. Historically, it is what he likes to do the most.”

Admiration

Leaving Alonso’s new adventure aside, Alesi also wanted to share his best anecdote with the Alpine rider: “I am going to tell a story. It was at Hockenheim and, at that time, we had the long circuit, it was not the Hockenheim that we have now. There were those long straights that went into the woods, so of course we had the stadium section with the whole crowd and then for a long time you were in the woods with no crowd. So Alonso was by my side (at the parade of pilots) Y suddenly at the end of the forest there was a fan with a sign that said: ‘Happy birthday, Fernando’. So I turned to him and said ‘Fernando, is it your birthday?’ And I asked him how old he was and he told me: ’20 years old! So that’s my memory of him and now to look at the career that he’s had is just amazing. What a fighter… pilots like him are worth the price of a ticket”.
