Gertjan Verbeek was fired as trainer of Almere City on Tuesday. The 59-year-old Verbeek has been at the helm of the club from the Kitchen Champion Division since last summer.
“A lot of energy has been put into the initiated process from both sides, but the joint conclusion is that it has now stalled”, the press release of the club from Almere reads. Almere City reports that Verbeek and the management of the club have decided in good consultation to end the collaboration. “Both parties are not confident enough that this can be turned around in the short term.”
“Almere City FC is now looking for the right succession for Verbeek. In the meantime, the current technical staff takes care of the honours.”
Last season, Almere City finished fourth, but at the moment the club is in eighteenth place. Of the sixteen games played, Almere City lost nine. Four times there was a draw and three times the three points were for Verbeek’s team.
After the 2-0 defeat against MVV last Friday, Verbeek was clear in his analysis. “We fell behind clumsily after the break. It was one of those games in which we even got a penalty, but that doesn’t go in. When you see how that second goal came about, you would almost think of sabotage .”
It is not the first time that Verbeek has been fired: he was also sent home prematurely at Feyenoord, AZ and Nürnberg, among others.
