David gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) won the fifth and final stage of the Tour de Luxembourg, between Mersch and the capital of the country, of 183.7 km, in a 81st edition that the Portuguese Joao Almeida has won (Deceuninck-Quick Step) who also entered second position this Saturday.
The stage led to a tough final ramp, of a few meters but with great effort, in which the group of favorites managed to gain a few meters of advantage, in which Gaudu was the strongest. The Frenchman opened enough space that he imposed himself in a long sprint, to win what is the sixth stage win in his professional career (including two partials of the Vuelta a España 2020), with a time of 4h 30m 59s. After the Frenchman, Almeida entered, confirming his leadership in the event, of which he was the final winner. The third place went to the also French Pierre Latour (Team TotalEnergiesa), being the best Spanish on the stage Jesús Herrada, in the ninth place.
Almeida prevails in the general classification with a time of 17h20’44 “, being second the Swiss Marc Hirschi (UAE-Team Emirates), 46 seconds away, and third the Italian Mattia Cattaneo (DQT), at 1’05 “. The Spanish David de la Cruz (UAD) finished fourth, at 1’09”. Almeida, who becomes the first Portuguese to conquer the general of the Tour de Luxembourg, highlights his best season as a professional, because in 2021 he won the Portuguese time trial championship, as well as the Tour of Poland, where it was imposed in two stages.
