Everything indicates that the future of gaming is in the cloud, as with services like Google’s Stadia or Nvidia’s GeForce Now we can play games from our phones, computers and televisions, directly from the cloud.
However, streaming in general still has some issues as it requires an excellent Internet connection and extremely low latency. Until then, many users prefer to play games with a PC at home, even if it means giving up playing on any other device.
Now, Dell’s Alienware has revealed a slightly different concept of the future of gaming: Nyx concept.
Nyx concept allows play from any device in the house, streaming games from a central computer over your local wireless network.
This means that a decent wireless network is still needed, but some of the latency and bandwidth issues for cloud gaming have been resolved or reduced.
Concept Nyx could provide a more versatile experience until we get to the point where cloud gaming is more usable and super-fast internet connections are easier to find.
The concept basically consists of a powerful computer that resides in your home. That computer can use your home’s LAN to stream games to devices such as a laptop, phone, or TV. And you’ll control everything with the Alienware UFO controller.
It can connect to all your different devices and quickly switch between them as you move around the house.
Furthermore, the system is not limited to just one person: Concept Nyx can power up to four game streams at the same time. So you might be playing an entirely different game than someone else in your house. These games would be streamed to different devices, but all from one computer.
When you move around the house, the Concept Nyx is able to intelligently switch between moving devices. This allows you to resume the game in a matter of seconds.
The Nyx concept is not yet ready for the public and Alienware is still working on it. But, over time, it can become a consumer product. We still don’t know how much it would cost and, of course, the drawings are far from finished.
