Algerian War: “The massacre of March 26, 1962 is unforgivable”, declares Emmanuel Macron

As the 60th anniversary of the end of the Algerian War approaches, the Head of State sent a new signal of appeasement to this dark page of French history, Wednesday January 26 during a speech.

After the pardon for the Harkis in September 2021, the Head of State this time addressed the Pieds-noirs, the French repatriated from Algeria. During a speech, held Wednesday, January 26, he recalled the trauma of thousands of families and described as“unforgivable”the shooting of March 26, 1962 in Algiers, where a dozen supporters of French Algeria were killed by the army.

It is a drama passed over in silence and a strong gesture passed on to the returnees from Algeria. “Sixty years later, France today recognizes this tragedy. And I say it loud and clear, the massacre of March 26, 1962 is unforgivable for the Republic”, said Emmanuel Macron. A new step towards forgiveness between France and the Pieds-noirs.
