Pertsev Declines Bail, Will Spend More Time in Prison While Appellate Process Continues
A Dutch court has denied the bid for bail by Alexey Pertsev, the main developer of Tornado Cash, who was found guilty of money laundering and sentenced to five years and four months in prison.
Bail Appeal Denied
Pertsev’s legal team had argued that granting him bail would not pose a risk and would allow him to better prepare his appeals. However, the court rejected their request, citing concerns that Pertsev might flee.
conditions of Detention Criticized
Pertsev’s lawyers have criticized the conditions of his detention, which do not allow him access to the internet or computers, making it difficult for him to work on his legal defense. They stated that this is unacceptable, considering the fundamental legal issues at stake and that Pertsev’s case may go to the highest court in the Netherlands.
Pertsev Convicted of Money Laundering
Pertsev was found guilty earlier this week of money laundering offenses stemming from his involvement with Tornado Cash between July 9, 2019 and August 10, 2022. The convicted developer was accused of making personal use of the platform and providing services to criminals.
Appeal Process Takes Shape
Pertsev’s legal team has filed an appeal to the s-Hertogenbosch Court of Appeal, which can take several months to resolve. In this period, Pertsev is mandated to remain in prison, working on his legal defense under the current conditions.
