Top-seeded Alexander Zverev bowed out early at the Munich Open with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Danish teenager Holger Rune on Wednesday.

In a duel of Chileans, Alejandro Tabilo won 6-3 6-4 against Cristian Garín to access the round of 16 of the tournament on clay.

Zverev, twice champion of the contest in the Bavarian city, received a direct pass to the second round. But the German Olympic champion could not against an 18-year-old rival and current number 70 in the ranking.

“It was my worst match in years,” Zverev said. “I was very nervous before the game. He hadn’t played in Germany in front of spectators for a long time. I would have lost to anyone in the draw today.”

Zverev had reached the quarterfinals in his last five appearances in Munich, a streak that included back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018.

Rune scored his first win against a Top 10 player in his career.

Tabilo’s rival in turn will be the Frenchman Hugo Gaston.
