Álex Márquez leads with a surprising Mir stuck to 45 thousandths

A few drops of water fell from the sky of Portimao endangered the normal development of the first free practice of the season for MotoGP, but Morbidelli only crashed for that reason, with what for him is the title that nobody wants from the first fall it’s from the season. Fortunately, the session was able to develop normally and brought the first joys and surprises of the season, with the leadership of an Álex Márquez for whom the Ducati suits him wonderfully and with the unexpected second place of Joan Mir with the Honda that nobody expected.

It is true that both benefited from the soft rear tyre, something that their closest rivals Luca Marini and Marco Bezzecchi also did, and that other important riders preferred to hold out on the track with the medium compound, such as Fabio Quartararo, Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Márquez, who made a little train from eighth to tenth place.

Álex’s 1:38.782 is a good time to start with (Pecco marked 1:37.9 in the test two weeks ago) and has given him an advantage of 45 thousandths of a second over a Mir who finished 13th in the last test of the preseason, almost eight tenths of the head. It is still too early to draw conclusions about what the weekend will be like, but either Honda have saved something this winter or they have found something at the last moment. Let’s see if they can confirm the good feelings in FP2 in the afternoon, which will be the session that decides which drivers go directly to Q2 and which will be forced to go through Q1 purgatory. It is one of the changes for this year that entails the introduction of sprint racing.

Going back to the time table, after the leading four and until closing the top ten: Zarco, Maverick, Martín and the aforementioned Quartararo, Bagnaia and Márquez. Further back, Aleix 11th, Rins 13th, Raúl Fernández 17th, Augusto Fernández 19th and Pol 20th.
