It’s a tale that sounds like something pulled straight from a fantasy epic: A film director, so deeply in love with a video game, pours his heart into a massive pitch. This dedication then softens the heart of the game’s creator, leading to a major movie deal. This is exactly what happened with Alex Garland and the upcoming Elden Ring film. Many might not believe it, but Garland, who will direct the movie, is a true super-fan. He’s played through the game countless times. This deep personal connection fueled his drive to bring the world of Elden Ring to the big screen.
The story behind this passion project comes from a recent article in The New Yorker, titled “A24’s Empire of Auteurs.” This piece explored the growth of the film company A24 and its commitment to unique projects. It also revealed a few details about how the Elden Ring movie began. Noah Sacco, A24’s Head of Film, recalled how Garland would often talk about the game on the phone. Eventually, Sacco visited Garland at home and watched him play.

Sacco was instantly captivated by the game’s fantasy world. He felt it strongly resembled the grand scope of The Lord of the Rings. So, when Garland asked about making a film, Sacco quickly said yes. But Garland didn’t stop there. He wasn’t content just pitching to FromSoftware or Bandai Namco, the game’s developers and publishers. Instead, he went the extra mile. He wrote a script of over 160 pages. He also created 40 pages of detailed illustrations. All this was to directly persuade Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s original director, to give his blessing.
Garland’s immense effort paid off. He successfully earned the green light to create the Elden Ring film. This shows how much his hard work and passion truly mattered. Given Garland’s strong track record with previous films, fans should expect a high-quality movie adaptation.
Right now, the Elden Ring movie does not have a set release date. Filming has not yet begun.
