Alex Duong dead at 42: Blue Bloods star loses devastating cancer battle

Actor and stand-up comedian Alex Duong died on Saturday at the age of 42. His death ends a brutal, year-long battle with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. The rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer ravaged his body and ultimately led to fatal septic shock. Duong passed away at 11:00 a.m. in Santa Monica, California.

He was surrounded by family and loved ones in his final moments. Fellow actor and close friend Hilarie Steele was by his side. Duong was a rising talent in the entertainment industry, widely recognized for his memorable guest role as Sonny Le on the hit CBS procedural “Blue Bloods”. The tragic news of his passing was verified according to a detailed report released over the weekend.

The nightmare began in 2025. Duong developed a severe headache behind his eyes. Doctors soon discovered the aggressive tumor.

The mass caused extreme swelling. It eventually robbed him of his vision, leaving him permanently blind in his left eye. He went into septic shock on Friday, March 27. He died the following morning.

The diagnosis abruptly halted a skyrocketing career. Duong had just been invited to open for comedian Ronny Chieng on tour. Industry insiders also noted he was attached to a developing “Blue Bloods” spinoff project before the illness stopped his ability to work. His sudden medical crisis devastated the Los Angeles comedy community. They rallied around him instantly. In August 2025, fellow comics organized “The Alex Duong Has Cancer In His Eye Comedy Benefit Show” at Largo at the Coronet to help cover his mounting medical treatments.

Tributes are flooding social media platforms today. Major venues like The Comedy and Magic Club are remembering his infectious energy and raw talent on stage. Duong leaves behind his wife and his young daughter, Everest.
