Alek Manoah and Bo Bichette lead the Blue Jays to victory over the Pirates

Alek Manoah whitewashed opponents into the eighth, Bo Bichette homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 on Friday.

Manoah (13-7) gave up five hits and struck out six over 7 1/3 innings. He retired 15 of his last 18 opponents.

The right-hander went at least seven innings without allowing a score for the first time since Sept. 13, when he went eight innings.

Toronto has won 10 of 15 games and held onto its 1 1/2-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the race for the third and final wild-card berth in the American League playoffs.

The Blue Jays scored twice on three straight hits off Tyler Beede (1-5) to start the fourth inning.

For the Blue Jays, the Dominicans Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 4-1, Teoscar Hernández 5-1, Santiago Espinal 3-1 with two produced. Mexican Alejandro Kirk 3-0.

For the Pirates, the Dominicans Oneil Cruz 4-0, Rodolfo Castro 4-0. The Venezuelan Tucupita Marcano 3-0.
