Alejandro Mayorkas faces impeachment trial for supporting the Republican bloc

WASHINGTON. – The United States House of Representatives dealt a major blow to its Republican President Mike Johnson when it voted against firing Joe Biden’s top border official yesterday.

By a vote of 214 to 216, the House blocked a committee’s complaint against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Four Republicans defied their leaders and joined Democrats in opposing the allegations.

The House Homeland Security Committee approved two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas last week, a nearly unprecedented move against a member of a president’s Cabinet over a political dispute.

This had only happened once in American history, in 1876, when a Secretary of War was impeached for criminal misconduct.

House member Tom McClintock said the investigation into Mayorkas failed to “identify a prosecutable crime.”

During the debate, McClintock said, “Secretary Mayorkas is guilty of mismanagement of our immigration laws on a cosmic scale.”

However, he added that the Constitution does not provide for impeachment to be used as a weapon in partisan political disputes.
