Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his campaign at the Doha Open 500 with a win, defeating Marin Cilic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in just 1 hour and 39 minutes. This was Alcaraz’s first official game of the season, and he’s now 10-1 in his last 11 matches. Cilic, 36, had undergone an operation on his right knee last May but showed no signs of giving up, putting up a good fight against the favored Alcaraz.
Initially, Alcaraz had a tough time finding his rhythm, having been crowned the champion in Rotterdam just eight days prior. After breaking Cilic’s serve in the first game, he struggled to maintain the momentum, and Cilic had opportunities to take the lead. However, Alcaraz’s persistence eventually paid off, and he managed to secure the first set. Cilic’s effectiveness with his serve made him a formidable opponent, but Alcaraz’s determination and skill ultimately led to his victory.
Notably, this was not the first meeting between the two players. Cilic had won their previous encounter in Estoril back in 2021. Alcaraz, however, has grown in experience and skill since then, having played in his first Grand Slam final in Australia earlier this year. In Doha, he had also played and won three games in the previous Open, showcasing his ability to perform on the Qatari cement courts.
The match was intense, with both players giving their all. Cilic refused to back down, and Alcaraz had to work hard to break his serve for the second time in the seventh game. This break proved crucial, as it gave Alcaraz the edge he needed to take the first set. In the second set, Cilic continued to fight, but Alcaraz’s consistency and skill ultimately led to his victory.
Alcaraz’s team, including coach Samuel López, physiotherapist Juanjo Moreno, physical trainer Alberto Lledó, doctor Juanjo López, and agent Albert Molina, were all present to support him in Doha. He was also joined by his friend Jimmy Butler, who was seen cheering him on from the stands.
Situation complicated
The match was not without its challenges, as Cilic put up a strong fight, and Alcaraz had to work hard to secure his victory. At one point, Cilic was leading 5-3, and it seemed like the second set might go his way. However, Alcaraz managed to turn the tide, and the final score was 6-4 in his favor. This win marked Alcaraz’s sixth consecutive victory on a hard surface, a streak he last achieved during the Asian tour when he won in Beijing and reached the Shanghai quarters.
Alcaraz continues to wear the Nike mangaless elastic that he premiered at the Australian Open. He’s expected to change his equipment again in Indian Wells, coinciding with the start of the American Masters 1000 tour.
Zhang or Nardi
Alcaraz will now face the winner of the match between Chinese player Zhizhen Zhang and Italian Luca Nardi in the second round. The Italian player comes from the previous phase, and this match is expected to be a thrilling encounter. Another Spanish player, Roberto Bautista, will debut against Belgian Zizou Bergs. Alcaraz will have a day’s rest before his next match, giving him time to prepare and strategize for his upcoming encounter.
