Halloween is celebrated annually on October 31. This date marks the last day of the Celtic calendar in the Christian community.
It is considered the eve of All Saints’ Day. The tradition originated in Scotland and Ireland, rooted in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.
Historically, it was believed that on this day, the barrier between the living and the dead worlds would open. Spirits were thought to visit their families.
The practice of dressing up in ghost-like costumes was believed to bring peace to ancestral spirits. Early traditions included hollowing out pumpkins to carve scary faces and placing lit candles inside, creating what are now known as jack-o’-lanterns.
These carved pumpkins were sometimes hung on trees as symbols of ancestors. They were then buried once the festival concluded.
