Ajith Kumar Defends Vijay on 41 Karur Stampede Deaths: Blame Shared

Veteran actor Ajith Kumar has openly addressed the tragic stampede that occurred at a political rally for Thalapathy Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu. He asserted that Vijay alone should not be held responsible for the incident. Kumar emphasized a broader societal accountability, including that of the media.

The stampede, which took place on September 27, resulted in the deaths of 41 people, including women and children. Over 60 individuals were also injured. Following the tragedy, Vijay faced significant public criticism.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter India, Ajith Kumar stated, “As a society, we have become obsessed with gathering crowds to show our support. This must end.” He noted that while fans’ love is appreciated, their attention and expression of support need careful monitoring.

Kumar highlighted instances of uncontrolled fan behavior, such as bursting firecrackers and tearing screens in cinemas during celebrations. He stressed that such actions must cease. This behavior, he argued, reflects poorly on the entire film industry globally.

“I am not trying to demean anyone, but as I said, because of this stampede, a lot is happening in Tamil Nadu today. Vijay is not solely responsible for this. We are all responsible,” Kumar affirmed. He suggested that the media also plays a role in fostering this culture.

He drew a comparison to sports events, noting that while cricket matches draw large crowds, the same chaotic behavior seen at celebrity gatherings is absent. Kumar questioned why such incidents are primarily associated with film stars and celebrities. He concluded by urging fans to find more appropriate ways to express their admiration.
