John Heitinga is back at Ajax, this time as the head coach. He’s signed a two-year deal that’ll keep him in Amsterdam until June 2027.
Heitinga knows the club inside out – he played for Ajax until 2008 and even returned to finish his career there in 2015.
Now, he’s taking charge, with Marcel Keiser as his assistant.
Heitinga’s Journey
Heitinga started as a player, then moved into coaching Ajax’s younger teams. In 2022, he took the reins of the main team for a while. After that, he worked with West Ham and Liverpool, winning the Premier League with the Reds.

Heitinga says he’s learned a lot from his time in England, working with David Moyes and Arne Slot. Now, he’s ready to be the main man at Ajax.
“I’m really excited to start. The last few years in England did me a lot of good. I got to develop more as a coach and see how two big clubs work from the inside. I’m honored to get this chance to be the head coach at Ajax,” he says.
