Aida Nuño and Cristina Álvares, the honorees of the 30th edition of the Lagos de Covadonga Challenge

The classic Asturian cyclist Desafío Lagos de Covadonga by TotalEnergies will celebrate its 30th edition this year. It will be next June 4 with departure from Cangas de Onís and arrival at the mythical Lakes of Covadonga. Every year the test pays tribute to the most important legends in the history of cycling, this year being the figures of Aida Nuño and Cristina Álvarez Mendo who They will join other legendary honorees such as Miguel Indurain, Lucho Herrera, Reimund Dietzen or Álvaro Pino.

The test will have the participation of more than 3,000 cyclists from all over the Spanish geography and from different European countries, who will enjoy an iconic tour of the impressive landscapes of the Asturian geography and through some of its most emblematic ports. A historic test that has deep-rooted traditions such as paying homage every year to great references of sport in general and cycling in particular. This year, the focus will be on two female figures from Asturian sports: Aida Nuño and Cristina Álvarez Mendo.

Aida Nuño Palacio (Hevia, Siero), is considered the best runner in the history of Spanish cyclocross. In his track record he has seven elite national championships (the first when he was only 18 years old) and two juniors, as well as a remarkable 17th position in the Cyclocross World Championship in 2016. She played her first Women’s Cyclocross World Championship in 2000, when she was only 16 years old. Beyond sports competition, thanks to her studies in Business Administration and Management, She has been Marketing Manager of Sport LifeStyle and in charge of Logistics and Communication of the MMR Factory Racing Team. She has recently been appointed General Director of Sports of the Government of the Principality of Asturias.

Cristina Álvarez Mendo (Oviedo) is the President of the Aramo Cycling Club, organizer of the Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias. She is the only woman at the head of a professional road cycling event in Spain and works tirelessly so that, every year, the Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias is a benchmark in the national sports calendar. Her tireless work has led her to be recognized with one of the most important distinctions in our country, the Medal of Sports Merit, granted by the Higher Sports Council. Cristina Álvarez Mendo is a mother, an employee, and a member of the executive committee of the Spanish Association of Professional Cycling Race Organisers. The act of homage will be held in Cangas de Onís next Saturday, June 4, coinciding with the start of the 30th edition of the Lagos de Covadonga Challenge by TotalEnergies 2022.
