AI can destroy people, but there is a way out

A lot has been said and written about this recently artificial intelligence (AI), also called artificial intelligence. Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum (ETH), is now also making his contribution. In a blog post, Buterin states that he is not confident about the future of AI and what the revolutionary technology can mean for humanity. But there is hope.

Ethereum founder: AI could destroy humanity

Buterin makes a clear distinction between AI and other technologies of the last centuries such as airplanes, firearms and social media. AI has the potential to develop its own consciousness and will. We as humanity have never experienced this before and it brings with it new dangers.

“AI is a new form of consciousness that is becoming increasingly intelligent and has a serious chance of surpassing human mental capabilities and becoming the most powerful ‘species’ on Earth,” Buterin said.

In this “worst-case scenario,” according to Buterin, AI could even wipe out humanity if this were to benefit the development of AI.

Buterin points to a recent study that concludes that the probability of AI destroying humanity is 5 to 10 percent. Almost five thousand AI experts were surveyed for this study.

Another option: symbiosis between humans and AI

However, this path to utter destruction is one of the possible scenarios in a world with AI. Buterin believes that the development of AI can also be more successful. However, humanity will then have to exercise more control over the AI.

According to Buterin, one possibility for this is the integration of so-called “brain-computer interfaces” (BCI). An example of such a BCI is the “Neuralink”, which the entrepreneur Elon Musk has often spoken about. This is a small computer that is connected to the brain. Of course, this sounds like science fiction, but there’s a good chance we’ll see such integrations Biotech will actually see it in the future.

Buterin believes that the use of BCI would reduce the distance between humans and AI. According to Buterin, this would be the “safe way” in a world with AI. Buterin therefore suggests two possible paths: the destruction of humans through AI or a symbiosis between humans and technology.

As humanity we are at a fork in the road. Time will tell which path will be taken, but what is certain is that the coming years will be crucial for the future of humanity.
