Agricultural and fishing production will increase 14% in the region

The agricultural prospects defined by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for 2021-2030 present a landscape fraught with challenges for food and agricultural markets in the following 10 years.

In a report published in this regard, both organizations point out that, although progress is expected on many important fronts to comply with the provisions of the 2030 Agenda and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the agricultural sector will have important challenges to overcome.

They state that it is estimated that Average global food availability per person to grow 4% over the next 10 years and it reaches just over 3,025 kcal / day in 2030, but that world average hides the differences between one region and another.

“Consumers in middle-income countries are expected to increase their food intake significantly, while the diet of low-income countries will remain about the same”, States the report.

It is also stated that agricultural and fisheries production in Latin America and the Caribbean It will increase 14% over the next 10 years and that just under 60% of this growth is attributed to crop production and around 37% to the expansion of the livestock sector.

He argues that although the region has abundant land, intensification will be important to increase crop production and land use for crops is projected to increase 3%, while the harvested acreage will grow 5%, motivated by the increasing prevalence of double crops.

He adds that the region will continue to be the largest soybean producer and its share in world production will exceed 54% in 2030. Growth in livestock production will benefit from increases in productivity and greater intensification, with greater use of cereals. for forage in production.

The poultry meat production will account for almost 70% of the growth of meat production by 2030, while beef and pork production will constitute 17% and 4%, respectively.

Regarding trade, the report explains that during this decade the net value of the region’s exports will increase 31%, just over half the rate achieved during the last 10 years.
