Lebanon Bankrupt: The whole world is aware of the extent to which the island country Sri Lanka has become poor and after that how the people there have seen and are seeing the situation. But do you know that another country of the world has become poor now. We are talking about the Gulf country of Lebanon. Here hunger is increasing to such an extent that people are not able to get even food items. They have to stand in long queues even for easily available items of food. Even a packet of bread is available at a price of more than $ 20 i.e. 1500 rupees.

According to a media report, a person named Khaleel Mansoor says that he queues for hours to get bread for his family and many times he is not even able to take this bread. Before the economic crisis in 2019, this country was called the Switzerland of the Middle East. The banking sector here has been extremely successful. Lebanon defaulted on its national debt in 2020 and its currency has lost nearly 90 percent of its black market value. Seeing the condition of Lebanon, the World Bank says that this country is facing its biggest economic crisis since the 19th century. While the US says that four out of five Lebanese people are living below the poverty line.

Government forced to end subsidies

Faced with demands from international creditors for reforms in exchange for releasing new aid, the beleaguered government has been forced to end subsidies on most essential goods. However, wheat has been excluded from this rule. In the black market, food items are being sold for thousands of Lebanese pounds. Mansoor, 48, says that ‘I came without bread for three days last week because I did not have 30,000 Lebanese pounds.’ Buying just one bread for people means standing in long queues outside bakeries. Many times when they go to the bakery, there is no bread available.

Mansoor said, ‘Today I was in the queue for three hours, yesterday it was for two and a half hours, now what will happen next? I have to feed my family. what else can I do?’ On the other hand, bakeries say that there are long queues for the last two weeks and they are facing shortage of goods. He says that some customers are even bringing guns and knives with them. While local media say that fighting is taking place outside the bakery shops. In many places, customers have even opened fire to get more bread. The shopkeepers have asked the army to intervene in the matter.

There was an explosion in 2020

Ukraine has promised to export wheat to Lebanon, which is currently facing severe food security and economic crisis. It is unable to export its wheat because of the ongoing war with Russia. Lebanon exports up to 80 percent of its wheat from Ukraine. The country’s wheat storage capacity has been affected to a large extent after the Beirut port here in August 2020. The explosion killed more than 200 people, injured thousands of others and destroyed parts of the Lebanese capital. The explosion occurred after hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in a port warehouse caught fire.
