Hurricane Beryl Brings Destruction to Caribbean and Mexican Coasts

Caribbean Region Hit Hard by Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl is causing significant damage in the Caribbean region, with the storm expected to affect the Mexican coast by this weekend. The phenomenon has been compared to a category 5 hurricane, leaving at least 11 people dead in its wake across Jamaica and other Caribbean islands.

Mexican Authorities Take Precautions

In Mexico, authorities have recommended that people stay at home, businesses have closed, and transportation has been suspended. Pablo Melo, a Uruguayan living in Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan, has been sharing his experiences with the storm. He has been "locked in" since Thursday afternoon, with very strong winds and heavy rain forecast.

Preparations for the Storm

Melo has advised people to prepare for the storm by boarding up windows, securing outdoor furniture and decorations, and stocking up on canned goods, flashlights, and portable radios. With the possibility of an interruption in electrical service, people are also advised to have a plan in place for alternative lighting and refrigeration.

Storm Expected to Strengthen

The hurricane is expected to strengthen over the weekend in the warm waters of the Gulf, with the possibility of making landfall in northern Mexico and the southeastern coast of Texas late Sunday or early Monday. As of Friday afternoon, the center of the storm was located 580 miles southeast of Brownsville, Texas, and was moving with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.

Hurricane Watch Issued

A hurricane watch has been issued for the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Sargent, further north, as well as for the northeastern coast of Mexico from Barra el Mezquital to the mouth of the Rio Grande.
