Africa is suffering from an unprecedented global food crisis

This is shown by a study presented at the African Commission for Agricultural Statistics Around 20% of Africa’s population is undernourished amid an unprecedented food crisis that has worsened since the coronavirus pandemic. Compared to previous figures, Central Africa is the area recording the largest increase in malnutrition prevalence at 4.3%.

At the moment, Around 78% of the continent’s inhabitants cannot afford a healthy diet, a figure that contrasts with the 58% of the world’s population who are able to do so. Children are a group that suffers directly from the consequences: Three out of ten suffer from stunted growth because of inadequate nutrition. Experts attribute this data to increases in the price of basic foods.

In the report, the authors remain confident that these findings will drive the transformation of agricultural and food systems, as well as other systems such as education, health and energy, to achieve improvements in production, nutrition and the lives of all people.
