Afghanistan: With the Taliban’s Arrival, Artists Live in Fear in Kabul

In Afghanistan, the Taliban banned the music, painting, tattoos. France Télévisions reporters have found painters, tattoo artists, models, who see their world destroyed and their future shattered.

The Taliban installs their government in Kabul, Afghanistan, and the list of ministers has enough to thrill the FBI. At the Interior Ministry, in particular, is Sirajuddin Haqqani, founder of the Haqqani network, close to al-Qaeda and who has already organized deadly attacks. A Ministry of Good and Evil was installed. The Taliban banned music, paintings and tattoos. Artists now live in fear. Painters now calligraph the Islamic emirate’s propaganda.

Despite the reassuring communication, the Taliban are patrolling weapons and increasing controls. An officially closed cultural center serves as a refuge for some artists who meet there. Abdoul Naser, a tattoo artist, has yet to meet a Taliban. “But I got a threatening call right after they arrived, so I’m afraid they’ll cut my hands off.”, he testifies. A model who still paraded a few months ago at Kabul Fashion Week is sure that fashion will no longer have a place in this new country. Artists burn their works that may shock the Taliban.
